Pittsburgh Steelers push RB Jonathan Dwyer get into shape by training camp – NFL News
Pittsburgh Steelers’ running back, Jonathan Dwyer, has this season a clear opportunity to step up his position as their star RB, Rashard Mendenhall, is returning from an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) surgery and might not be hundred
percent.
This looks easy except for one issue that Jonathan needs to get into shape. He has to work hard on his fitness and conditioning to cut down his size to somewhere reasonable level to capitalise on the opportunity.
In one of his recent remarks, the player admitted that he needs to change his diet from fast food to bring down his weight. He added he was heading to South Florida to work on his weight loss before the start of training camp this month.
He said:
"I am just realizing how much it takes to get where you are in this league and how hard you have to work and push yourself. This is my year to prove something to myself, the league, to the organization, that I am worth more than what I
was."
Steelers are hitting the training camp later this month, and while Mendenhall is struggling to be fully fit and ready, Dwyer has the entire RB place wide open in front of him, provided he gets back into shape.
Coach, Mike Tomlin, has recently expressed concerns over the fitness level of the player, emphasising the need for him to slash down his weight to considerable extent before joining the training camp.
Although the coach said he should not be surprised to see the RB back almost in the same size, still he hopes the player finds a way out to gain back his fitness.
He too pointed out that the issue of the injury problem of Rashard provides Dwyer a good opportunity but it will depend down to his fitness and conditioning.
It is not for the first time that the player has confronted the fitness problem; the issue of overweight has almost always been there with him during his two-year tenure with Steelers, much to the frustration of the coach.
