Pittsburgh Steelers remain content with situation at all positions-NFL News
The Pittsburgh Steelers, who have remained without much hustle bustle on the free agency since its start on March 13, 2012, confirmed not to be holding any such ambitions in the near future.
Some reports earlier claimed that the team, which lately remained preoccupied with the salary cap issue, was likely to come out with a shopping list in the market.
Steelers’ general manager, Kevin Colbert, said that it was not the case as the management remains content with the present players’ strength of the squad.
Steelers, since end of the 2011-12 National Football League (NFL) regular season, have released a number of players, including some of the trusted veterans such as wide receiver, Hines Ward, to cut down the players’ salaries expense.
It has been reported that the team is able to create a space for about $8 million on the pay roster, which, according to some sections of media, it was aiming at retaining wide receiver, Mike Wallace.
It is unclear if the amount is going to be substantial enough to lock in the player on a longer contract. Wallace has recently been reported to be interested in joining the San Francisco 49ers or any other team around the league.
The player’s demand of deal worth somewhere around $120 million is the pertaining issue in the way of his prospective move to elsewhere.
According to a recent statement, Steelers’ management is still interested in giving a long-term deal to the player, but given the amount he has demand it remains a remote possibility.
Steelers otherwise have remained relatively calm. The only controversy at Pittsburgh was the disputed departure of offensive co-ordinator, Bruce Arians.
The official announced retirement from the league, but the decision of the so called retirement reportedly came from someone other than the official himself.
Later, Bruce joined the Indianapolis Colts in the similar position creating further doubts around the credibility of the decision of calling it quits.
Steelers’ vice president, Art Rooney II, was seen to be behind the controversial move of Arians’ departure, but he denied having any role in it.
Steelers’ management remains content with the situation on all other positions. Following redoing of deals with quarterback, Ben Roethlisberger, he is expected back to be their starter in the next season.
Roethlisberger had missed a number of games in the concluding period of the 2011 regular season. However, he has confirmed to come back healthy and fit.
Apart from redoing of deals and waivers, there is no significant change in the squad. Particularly, there is no notable hiring from the side off the free agency. It is going to remain the case throughout the offseason.
Steelers finished the past season while tied atop of the AFC North division along with their rivals, the Baltimore Ravens. Their run was finally ended with the loss of wild card game against the Denver Broncos.
