Pittsburgh Steelers start weighing draft options, managers visit pro days-NFL News
Pittsburgh Steelers’ head coach, Mike Tomlin accompanied by the general manager, Kevin Colbert, was spotted in the state of Ohio, Unites States, where they were attend the pro day, on Friday, March 09, 2012.
However, nothing has emerged since then with regard to the purpose of their visit, which more or less remains to finding potential players that the team is looking to recruit in the draft season, which starts in April.
Both officials are reported to be among the 22 team officials, who were present at the event to explore the prospective opportunity of draft signings.
With the National Football League (NFL) Scouting Combine, that was held in Indianapolis from February 22 to 28, 2012, over, the pro days have started in respective states and cities, where the potential players are expected to perform in front of their potential
suitors.
These events are featuring potential professional players from the college league, especially those who did not perform at the Combine.
For example, this year’s top draft picks, Andrew Luck and Griffin III, refrained from throwing football during the Combine and will be doing so in their respective pro days.
Steelers, who until recently have been working on their salary cap issue, which prompted them to release a number of their players, have not spoken of interest in pursuing draft players. They did not even inform about the positions for which they were seeking
players.
The presence of the GM and coach certainly makes it clear that the team is interested in pursuing some skilful draft players.
Both officials watched some of the notable players, including Mike Adams, Dan Herron, Michael Brewster and Devier Posey, performing at the pro day in Ohio.
Some reports have indicated that the present officials were not impressed from performance of the participating players.
Offensive tackle, Mike Adams, for example, shown some good skills during the event but his inconsistency was noted to be the main problem that could hurt his prospects with a professional team.
There is some speculation that Steelers might be interested in seeking a replacement to their veteran wide receiver, Hines Ward, who has recently been cut, apparently against his wishes.
Steelers were further forced by the salary cap issue to release more players and redo deals of some others.
They are said to have created some room on their roster as result of the waivers to either bring back some players off the free agency or look for new recruitment from the draft market.
The pro day visits from the Steelers indicate that the team might be more interested in drafting rookie players rather than exploring options in the free agency, which will start on March 13, 2012.
