Pittsburgh Steelers win 16-13 vs Kansas City Chiefs, lose QB Big Ben to shoulder injury – NFL Recap
The Pittsburgh Steelers managed to beat 16-13 the visiting Kansas City Chiefs in an overtime finish in a competitive fight at their home ground on Monday night (Nov. 12).
Although the Steelers lost their quarterback Ben Roethlisberger to a shoulder injury in third quarter of the game, which was played in wet conditions, they got past the Chiefs in overtime.
The win has helped the team to record fourth consecutive victory to extend their American Football League (AFC) North lead to 6-3. It was predicted by all commentators that the Steelers were likely to capitalise on the momentum of wins because they appeared
to have found the touch, which they lacked during initial couple of lost games into start of the season.
Since the field was slow after hit by heavy rain, the game was expected to be played in conditions similar to the one the Houston Texans had played a day earlier. It was strong defensive show-off put up from both sides, but the Steelers ensured a win at
the end.
The victory is more significant given their offence leader had to be taken on the sidelines for inspection for a shoulder injury. Chiefs’ defensemen squeezed Ben to hit the ground during a play and he looked in pain immediately after. He had then completed
9 out of 18 passes for a total measure of 84 yards.
Later coach Mike Tomlin confirmed that the player was helped to the locker room and inspected again. He then added that the QB had been taken to a local hospital for evaluation but level of his injury or current status was not disclosed by any member of
the team.
With dearth of information around the incident it is unclear if the player has suffered an injury as serious as separated shoulder or if there is a problem with his neck, which has rather serious repercussions. In case of a neck injury he might require a
longer period for recovery and rehab.
Big Ben has so far been safe and protected from any serious injury issues this season. A particular reason behind this is that offensive scheme of new offensive coordinator Todd Haley requires the quarterback to get rid of the ball as quickly as possible.
So, the offence leader is not chased around here and there for the ball by opponents.
In case of a serious blow to the player, the Steelers will face serious issues on the offensive line. Since nothing is confirmed yet, all appears to be safe and sound for them at present.
Meanwhile, the coach has praised Ben’s teammates for keep piling up pressure on the opponents despite losing Big Ben with still significant amount of plays left.
