Question:

Pizza Delivery Advice?

I have been delivering pizza for a while and I've noticed that I only make about half of what some of the other drivers make in tips. Does anyone have any advice on how to increase my tips? I try to be very polite.

I have heard some drivers say that they actually ask for more money. I could never do that. That seems very rude.

  1. Maybe you could offer the customer some freebies  Just stock up before you leave the restaurant and ask if they need any napkins, parm cheese, pepper flakes, etc.  They will think they are getting a little something extra and it won't cost you a thing!

    Good luck!

  2. I have been a delvering pizzas for a long time now.  The number one thing you need to do is to beat the drivers back to the store and take as many deliveries as possible.  Make sure management is dispatching the runs properly.  In order to make more than the other drivers you need to at least be as quick as them.  Do not get lost and make sure you have everything before you leave.

Now the average tip will make or break you as a driver.  When you approach a home you have to be friendly at all times.  Ask them how is their day, and also try to find something to compliment (this works better with women) ex oh you have a nice home etc.  You have to build rapport with a customer.  Here is some important advise: If they pay by credit card make sure that they fill out the tip.  Say it like this:  I need you to fill out the information and sign.  That way they have a chance to tip you by credit card.

There is alot of advantages that you could do as far as giving change back and tips, and that is you don't need to give back coin change.  For example if the total is 13.50 and they hand you a 20.00 bill, you give them 6.00 back and not 6.50.  You always round up. Example if it comes to 13.01 you would still give them 6 back.  Here is another important tip make sure you give the customer ones and not fives back, for example if you have an order that comes to 13.50, you give them 6 ones and not a five and a one.  This is because they would keep the five and give you the one, but if you give them 6 ones then they proberly give you 2 or 3 ones back.  See what that does?  Here is another thing if a kid comes to the door and he has money in his hand DO NOT GIVE HIM THE TOTAL!!! This is important because the parents gave him the $ and if you tell him the total he will count the money and give you exact change.  Example the total is 21.00 and the kid has 24.00 in his hand you tell him the total he keeps 3 for himself and gives you 21.00, but if you just hold your hand without giving the total he would just give you the 24.00.

Here is another trick and I call it the 5 on top trick.  Lets say that you get a total like 21.00 and they hand you 40.00 well you need to give them 19.00 back.  you need at least 4 ones a five and a ten dollar bill.  Well the more cash in their hand(number of bills) the better tip you will get.  I would in this situation give them 2 fives and 9 ones and put the fives on top when you give them the change.  This is important because the 5 is the first thing that they will see and will be more prone to give you whatever is the most convient.  This does not work all the time, but sometimes they are in a hurry and just take the 5 on top and give it to you.

Is is also important to learn how to read people and read certain situations.  I can do this but it takes time and the ability to judge.  If you feel that a customer will not tip ( I am very good at reading people) and you need to give them change back, ask them how much change do you want back.  This way they will think about the tip and may tip you.

Another important thing is the total.  Alot of times customer like to round to the nearest 5 or 10.  For example there is an order that comes to 13.50 and  they hand you a 20.00 and you give them the total before handing their change back 9 times out of 10 they would say "oh just give me five back"  See this is the 5 or 10 round theory. Here is the thing, if you just gave the change without giving the total 9 times out of 10 that same customer would give you 2 ones back.  See you got an extra dollar out of that.  This would hold true for 23 and change totals and 28 and change totals.  All these totals are unfriendly totals.  Any total that if you round to the nearst 5 or 10 that would give the driver less then a 2.00 tip is called an unfriendly total. See just knowing what the total is can give you an idea what the tip could be. one last note it is to speak clearly and be dressed professional!

  3. Tell the customers you don't have change. LOL. I'VE never done it when I was delivering pizza's, but some of my co-workers did. It helps if you get it there fast to. Gas pedal's on the right, good luck!!

  4. maybe the other  delivery  drivers  are lying to  you  to see   what you will  say or do....maybe  they are bragging  and don't  really get  that  much.

  5. um well get there in time my pizzas i get are always late so i never give tips and only pay the min. amount the guy is so stupid!...........................

  6. Do you show up for work looking unkempt?  You know - hair out of control, unshaven, clothes dirty, that sort of thing.

Maybe the customer saw you driving like a maniac?  Perhaps the pizza toppings slid off the pizza?

I got in trouble for this one once - did the guy see you eying his daughter (or wife, whatever)?

Maybe at the store the guy who hands out driving assignments is giving you the low-income part of town.

  7. First of all. I couldn't imagine someone asking for a bigger tip. That's crazy!!  I think it really depends on the customer. The bigger the order and better neighborhood, the bigger the tip!!!   Good luck, and keep smiling!
