  1. The most common cause is carbon flakes being blown off the inside of the exhaust manifold which often occurs when going to full throttle after a long

    period of idling or low speed running. Excessive carbon build-up might be a sign of poor engine tuning such as a badly timed injector pump or dirty injectors. Putting a spark screen on the exhaust outlet may trap the larger flakes but might be counterproductive if it starts clogging and reducing flow causing a further decline in performance.
