  1. You need to give more information for an adequate answer to this question. However, hippocampal place cells function to make mental maps of the environment. They would enable a mouse to remember a path through a maze, or the location of a hidden platform in a water maze (enabling the mouse to escape). Obviously, a mutant mouse without functional place cells would not be able to learn how to navigate around his environment
