  1. There are some great websites where you can enter your zip code or city and find a list of local volunteer opportunities. Some sites even have a check box so the organization can indicate whether they accept court-ordered volunteers. Check these sites for starters:

    www.1-800-volunteer.org

    www.volunteermatch.org

    www.idealist.org

    www.networkforgood.org

    www.change.org

    www.servenet.org

  2. You start with your heart; do you like kids? Animals? The environment? Academic interests? Working outdoors? Do you have a heart for the sick or elderly?

Then, contact organizations (civic or church-based) and start asking questions. Call your local elementary school and see who runs the summer day care programs in your town. Maybe they need an extra pair of hands. Your church secretary knows who runs the church nursery or vacation Bible school. There are daycares who like helpers. Do you have a YMCA in your town? They need volunteers for different jobs. Call and ask how to get involved.

You can shelve books at the library. City hall might know of local community festivals going on that need help to set up and tear down. Hospitals and nursing homes have volunteer coordinators who are in charge of those needs. People at nursing homes are desperate for fresh smiling faces. Go play checkers with them, or sing, or just visit. How hard is that?

So, start with what you like, and see where it takes you. Have fun!

    Best to you.
