Question:

Placenta question...?

I know this sounds gross what I'm interested in knowing was what other parents did with their child's placenta/after birth..

In my culture it is tradition to return it to the land.... Some tribes put theirs in a tree others in rocks on hills and some bury them on family land...

I'm sorry if the question sounds gross, I'm just curious what other families did with it..,..

  1. Not gross at all, it's a beautiful organ that does the most important work.

I had planned to eat my placenta (dried with herbs, then ground up and put it capsules).  Unfortunately, I had an extended hospital stay after the birth so couldn't do it myself and damned if I could convince my husband to do it! He stuck it in the freezer, and once it was home I felt it was too late to reap the benefits of placentophagy (eating it).

So I plan to defrost it and plant it under a new tree to celebrate my sons birthday and to honour our connection to the land.

Sooty: I love the idea of a fruit tree... I was going to use a wollemi pine that was sprouted around the same time my some was born.

  2. we have italian friends that took it home and buried it for goodluck or something

  3. At my hospital that I had both kids, it goes into the bin

  4. the hospital dispose of it, i dont think ive even seen mine when i had my children. Although i have read that some people eat them.

  5. I'm going to keep mine and bury it, plant a fruit tree over it.

My mum did that with all of us and I thought it was kind of special and nice that we all had our own trees that grew as we grew.

  6. First let's define placenta- its a structure attached to the uterus to nourish the fetus. A temporary organ serves as transport, therefore it must be disposed properly in the hospital after child birth. Belief must be disregarded to maintain optimum health in the family.

  7. Left it at the hospital...didnt want or have any need for it!!

  8. A while back there was a lot in the media about EATING the placenta...

There was outrage, I recall, when something along those lines was shown on British TV.

This USAToday article seems to be from the same time...
