natural or cultural sites that have to be visited near catania. there is a possibilty to rent a car if no public transportation.

I obviously recommend a visit and ascent to the Etna volcano. The only other must is Taormina, lovely little city with its wonderful theatre, and the neighborhood: Giardini Naxos down on the coast and Castelmola up un the hill.

It's easy enough to rent a car in Catania - at the air port.

There is a great open air bus ride (kind of like a tram) that tours parts of the city and costs only 5 Euro. You get on in the plaza in front of city hall. The ride lasts about half hour.

Near Catania:

Aci Castello is charming and there are several great ice cream places in the plaza next to the castle.
