Hey everyone! I am planning a trip around Europe and would like to know what are the places that I shouldn't miss about France (museums, castles, historic places, natural beauties, etc- anything you can come up to!).

As an extra in case anyone happens to know, a cheap way to travel around Europe (ie. train, plane) I would love to know along with the price ranges.

Thank you!!

  1. If you are interested in castles, you really should visit the Loire Valley in France, where there are lots of varied and beautiful ones to choose from. A good starting point would be Tours, which also has a lovely cathedral. The Loire Valley is also loved for its gentle climate, pleasant scenery, fine food and wine. Try, to begin with, a google search on 'Chambord' - one of the best castles.

  2. Simple! By train only...when you leave the UK - trains become an option? As it's holidays in france as previously mentioned with all the drawbacks travel first class only! you will need to purchase tickets online at www.tgv.co.uk or www.sncf.com,the tickets are called "prems" and work in the same way as flight standby's..you can travel very cheap like this in luxury.Ex:paris-Marseille/nice/biarritz for around 35euros(first class and it only takes three hours!).I suggest this route:eurostar to paris-paris/biarritz-biarritz/carcassonn... scenic!)-carcassonne/collioure-collioure... All direct trains,enjoy your holiday and avoid eurolines at all costs unless you enjoy 20hrs stuck in traffic!

  3. Places to visit:

    1 Mont St Michel: island abbey, #1 destination in France.. for good reason!

    2 Castles in Loire Valley: many to choose from, Chambord (city skyline-like roof) & Villandry (beautiful gardens) are couple of my faves

    3 Versailles: famous castle & gardens, with excellent tour of interior

    4 Alsace region: distinct German character, lovely (& cute) Alsatian houses, visit Colmar, Strasbourg is a given, and villages along Route des Vins (wine route)

    5 Caen/Normandy Beaches: if interested in World War II history

    6 Paris, of course!'

    7 French Riviera would probably be on many peoples' lists', but for breathtaking beaches, go to the ones near Bordeaux and further south (eg Arcachon).

    Wine-tasting: can be done in many regions, Champagne is easily accessible by Paris, Alsace's Route des Vins & Burgundy's Cote d'Or allow you to visit many places with your time, the latter can be traversed by bike.

    Cheap travel around Europe:

    Discount air travel now rivals trains as a cheap mode of transportation. See http://wikitravel.org/en/Discount_airlin... for a list. For train travel, many people use Eurail passes (www.raileurope.com), but whether this will save you money depends on the country, how much train travel you plan to do, and how. My attitude is basically that Eurail passes are not a deal, but a convenience, and if you want to save money with one, you have to make it work for you.

    Discount airlines advertise tickets as cheap as 1 pound ($2), but with taxes and everything, will cost at least $20 one-way between two countries. Train tickets generally are cheaper the further in advance you buy them. Look at www.voyages-sncf.fr to look at fares for trains in France.

  4. The catacombs in Paris, but take a good flashlight with you in case the lights go out.  Seriously!

  5. Nantes is lovely- lots of historic buildings (the Passage Pomeraye and the chateau which has recently been done up), and very French!

  6. Burgundy for landscapes and wines!!!

    French Riviera for exceptional landscapes, food, and glamour....

    Britain wild and nice region!!!!

    so much places to see in france!!

  7. The easy and CHEAP way to travel by plane is : easyjet.com. Earlier you buy your ticket and cheaper it is. ////good deals on lot of destinations in Europe.

    Here is a selection of the MUST SEE in France. Almost impossible to see everything, you have to check on the maps to plan your itinerary.

    * Paris

    *Le Mont Saint Michel - Bretagne ?

    *Rocamadour - Aveyron ?

    *Moustier Sainte Marie and the Gorges du Verdon and Lac d'esparon - 04 Alpes de haute Provence

    *Paris - of course

    * Chateau de Versaille

    *Chateaux de la Loire - Loire

    * Cassis sur Mer and the creeks- 13 Bouche du Rhone

    * Annecy - Haute savoie

    * area from Nice to Menton - 06 alpes Marritimes

    ....

    there is so many...

    You can check with photos yahoo pictures to have a better idea...

  8. i had been to the borders of swiss, italian and france. Not too bad, just a bit cold.

    i like overnight train to frace. You can try.

  9. Go to passports.com and go on one of there tour trips because they show you everything there is in France and they also book all the hotels you need plus you can choose how long you want the trip to be.

  10. Vezelay, Dijon, Lyon, Avignon are all beautiful historical towns/cities set in beautiful countryside.

    The trains are much cheaper than the uk but still....

    eg, Paris to Montpelier is about 70 quid (if yr <25 will be cheaper)

    cheapest way is to get a eurolines coach ticket and hop around.

    Montpelier and Sete are great, lively coastal towns with young people and lots of life.

    Marseille is a bit harder , Paris much like London.

    The Alps is pretty expensive but beautiful any time of year.

    Ive not done the West coast but heard good reports.

    Worth noting that August is the traditional time for the French to go on holiday so the Med area is PACKED, roads are clogged etc etc.

    If you have more time get a job that travels-

    eg  www.gobarging.com

    travel by boat, nothing better.

    Enjoy. Its a beautiful country full of history. The nightclubs are a bit pants though!
