Places in Mexico that start with El.?

please help me lol..a friend of mine asked me to find it for her and ive googled it and found sumthing really confusing but if u could help tht would be great!

The article "EL or LA" means "The" (I guess you know that already):

The city=La ciudad

The country= El país

The town= El pueblo

The people= El pueblo (it is the same!)

BUT, it is incorrect to begin names with an article, similar as it is in english, although we use articles more often in spanish tha you do it in english.

Ancient city names used to begin with the article, because spanish language was different from now; therefore, some ancient names could have article:

El Dorado (The Golden) which is a mitycal city who knows where.

Or they used to say long names, as:

"La Villa Rica de la Vera Cruz" that means "The Rich Ville of the Truth Cross"; and it was the original name to Veracruz city. But the current name is just "Veracruz", nobody says "La Veracruz" it sounds wrong.

We use to call Mexico city as "La Ciudad de México" (The Mexico City), but often we just call it "México".

A city name with article is "El Tajín", this is located in Veracruz state. But this is the only I know!.

On the other hand, the most of places are named with article, but not big cities, just small towns, I'll tell you some, you can google them (¿or "yahoo" them?):

El Bajío de San José

Las Güeras

La verdolaga

El Tecuán

El Mesón

El Ocote

La Manzanilla

El Turicate

and many, many more. But those are more like places, not populated, just sites in rural areas.

You will need more info.  There are many places in Mexico that begin with "El".  I live in a little place called El Grande.  There is a famous pyramid site called El Tejin...and hundeds of more places starting with "El".
