Places of interest around Redcar England?

Question

Will be visiting an elderly relative in Redcar again this year.

I usually just spend free time going to the nice beaches in the area. I thought this time I might hire a car and travel a little further a field. Can anyone recommend places within an hour or so drive from the town . tried looking on a tourist website but nothing much

listed.

Durham is the big one. It's a UNESCO World Heritage site and has a lovely castle and fabulous cathedral.

It might sound mad to recommend Sunderland, but it's got Fulwell Mill, the National Glass Centre, two good art galleries, the Anglo-Saxon church of St. Peter and a great beach. The Sunderland Empire gets the big West End shows these days too.

Whitby and Scarborough, that's where I'll be in august, beautiful scenery and beaches.

will be going to redcar too, cos i love the shops and arcades.

the chippy on the sea front sells great fish and chips.

It is one of the most beautiful parts of the UK.  Take a trip to Staithes and Robin Hood's Bay two beautiful little fishing villages.  About half way between them along the coast is Whitby a lovely town.  North of Staithes is the victorian seaside town of Saltburn, with a lovely beach and woods.

Then there is the huge expanse of the North Yorkshire Moors with its wild natural beauty and if you like historical sites it has many historic abbeys, embattled castles, churches and crosses.

You could take a trip to York if you have not been before.  There is a theme park at Lightwater Valley.
