I will be hiring a car in a few weeks to drive from London to The Lake District over two days. Never been to that side of England before. Does anybody know of any places of interest along the way that might be worth stopping to have a look at? Where will be the best place to stay for a night to do some sight seeing as well?

Thanks

  1. the most direct route is M1, M6, M6 toll, and M6 again up to the Lake District ... I'd definitely recommend the M6 toll, it may be expensive at £4.50 (I think that's the cost) but it's sheer bliss to get off the race track for a bit

which puts the half way point around the Welsh borders ... how about Chester or Ironbridge or the potteries or somewhere like that?

or you could stay on the M1 past the M6 turn-off and go across the Low Peak through Matlock and Buxton with sightseeing at the Blue John Caves at Castleton ...  or through the High Peak at Holmfirth, Last of the Summer Wine country

  2. You could try the  M25....The ..M1......The M6..You wont have a lot of time for site seeing apart from the extensive road works   The Yellow Piggy Banks...The yellow flying Piggy Banks...and the Red and white cones
