Question:

Places to camp and canoe in Georgia?

I need some recommendations for places where a group can camp and canoe for a weekend. No whitewater rafting; we're looking for a campground close by a scenic waterway that is mostly calm so we can take in the wildlife around us but also has a few rapids navigable by canoe. I've checked different websites (one listed a river on the Georgia coast that had alligators in it; why anyone would want to canoe that is beyond me) but I'd rather have personal recommendations. If you could list how many times you've canoed this waterway and why you are recommending it, I'd appreciate it. Thanks!

  1. Try the Flint River outdoor center. There is Camping along the beautiful Flint River. Kayaking, tubing, canoeing available. Canoes with equipment provided for 1/2 day, full day, and 2 day trips. Shuttle service for those with their own canoes. The half day trips are on smooth water so no whitewater unless you take the full day trip.  Also close by is F.D. R. State park.  So you can visit 2 state parks with in 20 miles of each other.  And be on the River.  I have never seen a gator in this part of the river but I have gone up and down it more times than I can count.  I am about 15 miles away from highway 36 bridge on the flint and 7 miles from 18 bridge.  The outdoor center is on Highway 36 between Woodland and Thomaston, GA.
