Question:

Places to go Skiing?

I am planning to go skiing in March to a place I have never been. I have been to the websites and they are all saying how great these mountains are. I am wanting consumer opinions on the mountains if you have ever been to them. From my choices of mountains, it seems as if getting to the mountain is not a problem. I am sick of Tahoe and Salt Lake City and I want to try something different. I am an advanced Skier if that matters on the mountain.

Taos, New Mexico

Jackson Hole, Wyoming

Mammoth Mountian, California

Copper Mountian, Colorado

Thanks.

Any other suggestions would be fine. As long as it is not in Salt Lake City or Tahoe or Sun Valley Idaho or Heavenly in California. Also, I would like to avoid Vermoent and pretty much all of the New England area because it is too cold. I want Spring Skiing.

  1. Well, if you are sick and tired of Salt Lake area (which happens to have the best skiing in the Continental United States -- especially Alta/Snowbird)...

...then that tells me you are a highly advanced skier. So the only place comparable on your list is Jackson Hole. Should be good in March, but probably cold (even in March).

Other than that, Mammoth is good, lots of steep stuff, but VERY crowded.

You might want to consider heli-skiing up in Alaska. Or Whistler-Blackcomb, but the snow is like cement there.

Personally, I think Alta is the best ski area in the country. I never tire of that place.

  2. of the 4 you mentioned I'd pick Jackson Hole but brrrr....personally I don't think any of your choices compare to the canyons but I guess you just want to getaway

if you don't mind an alternate suggestion have you ever tried Schweitzer Mtn. in Sandpoint, Id. Mild temps, lots of snow and you escape the crowds. If you do decide to try this place don't miss the chance to book a snowcat run...there is nothing that compares to skiing on snow that no other skis have touched

edit:someone else here suggested Whistler; nice nightlife and warm in the spring but the skiing in the spring is not that great

for a real adventure try spring skiing in the Cariboo & Monashee Mtns at Blue River BC 1-800-661-9170. Highest avg. snowfall in the WORLD, 11,000ft verticals and powder so dry it makes you think colorado champagne is nothing but slush.  It costs a bundle but it is really all inclusive: food, lodging, as many heli-runs as your legs can stand...they even wax your skis for you everyday

  3. New England isn't necessarily that cold in the spring. I don't know who you heard that from. Mad River Glen is one of the coolest mountains on the East Coast. It's worth taking a trip. It's old school (no snowboarders) and nothing is groomed. It's definitely an advanced skiiers paradise on the East Coast. The old single chair is a classic ride and if you tire of Mad River, Sugarbush, another great mountain is right next door.

  4. Of those places I've only been to Jackson Hole.  It was great.  I haven't been there since any of the recent building though.  Terrain wise it was some of the best.
