A bunch of us ladies are going there for the 1st time, for a long weekend, and would like to know if anyone has some personal recommendations for restaurants, bistros, etc.. that aren't TOO expensive or hard to get into. We're staying near Times Square. Also areas or shopping districts, clubs, etc.. where we might easily catch glimpse of a celebrity or 2 milling around? :) (Any other NYC tips appreciated!) Thanks!

  1. The China Grill is supposed to be a great more upscale Chinese place. But it is somewhat pricey. Here's the website and you can look at the menu and find directions:

And Ellen's Stardust Diner has singing waiters! I am not positive but I heard that they sing Broadway tunes while working. It is supposed to be pretty cute. :]

Again, here's the website so you can check it out for yourself:

If you haven't already gotten tickets to shows, TKTS booths are in several locations in the city. They can get you tickets for as much as half off. However, you can never be sure that they will have the tickets to a show you want to see. If it is a really popular show, it will be sold out and no discount tickets will be available. Here's the website for the locations of the booths:

Have a great time, New York is one of my favorite places to be. :]

  2. spice restaurant is really good, the chocolate mousse and lemongrass chicken is great! its thai food, if you never tried it, do! Times square is great to stay, its the heart of manhattan and new york city!

there's great shops and restaurants all within walking distance. Good comedy shows at night and ripleys believe it on not and madam tussads wax museum is there...

There's so much...I'm sure your hotel has a brocheure!

  3. How about the Olive Garden?

  4. i am a great New york Food critic(so i like to think) but I eat a lot and I would def tell u u must go To Saigon GRill on 14 th st and University sq..it is an vietnamese restaurant and the food is priced reasonable as well as freash and delicious..im telling u order the chicken skewers with peanut sauce and its delicious.......the best...

  5. NYC is a foodie's dream come true.. While here try foods that are not available in your city like Thai ( I like Jaya and Spice); for Indian I recommend Tiffin Wala and Madras Mahal; for Mexican try Baby Bo's Cantina; Korean food is best at Hangwai (it is veggie & fake meat).  All these places can be found at http://www.menupages.com   Click on NYC and then enter the name of the restaurant.

Also you should visit Top of the Rock (located at Rockerfeller Center). From here you can get a great view of the city.  Also go to 230 Fifth which is a rooftop bar on 27th St and 5th Ave. You get great views of the city and the drinks are less than $15.  Enjoy!!

  6. fun restaurants: La Palapa on St. Marks in the east village (yummy mexican with great margaritas), Freeman's Alley on the lower east side (there will be a wait but the cocktails are delicious), Dos Caminos SoHo on Houston (mexican; celebrities are often spotted there). These restaurants aren't tourist traps, they're local spots.

avoid times square altogether, except to go to back to the hotel room. you will only see tourists there.

to shop, SoHo or Bloomingdales area (there's an H&M, Urban Outfitters, etc)

to spot celebrities, go to the west village...

tip: don't tell the cab driver you're a tourist. Houston Street is pronounced HOWston NOT pronounced like the city in Texas
