  1. As for malls, the best ones to check out are the Rideau Centre, and The St. Laurent shopping centre. The best shopping experience would actually be to go to the Rideau center, then go on rideau street to see some local stores. As for restaurants, Moxies is great if you are in your twenties or early thirties, An Ottawa classic is The Blue cactus, just in the ByWard market, which is also a great place to check out in town and is located downtown near the rideau centre, or the Empire Grill, which is also located in the ByWard market.

You can't come to Ottawa without at least passing by the parliament building and checking out some of the monuments as well as the Rideau canal.

most of what I have said is located within walking distance of the Rideau center, and you could easily spend a full day just wandering the area and checking out everything.

  2. i only know malls

    rideau mall

    place d'orleans mall

    st.laurent mall

    bayshore mall

    carlingwood mall

  3. I'd say just go downtown.  You can check out parliament and a few museums if you like (museum of nature...which is currently under construction and only about half of it is open...the war museum, and then the museum of civilization is across the river in hull), the rideau centre (shopping mall) is right downtown, it has a fairly good selection of stores (including electronics -- there's a sony store and an EB games I believe) and there's tons of restaurants in the market.  If you want a diner, you can go to Zac's diner, a few blocks north of the rideau centre, or you could go to the elgin st. diner, which is a little farther away, just head south down elgin street, it's really close to the museum of nature.  There's a restaurant called Elephant and Castle inside the rideau centre, it's really quite good (it has a lot of british pub style food, e.g. fish and chips, yorkshire pudding, etc.).  As someone else mentioned, the empire grill is also downtown, it's good too.  Honestly, just take a walk in the market, there are tons of restaurants, I'm sure you'll find one you like.

  4. Bah! I can't believe spiral suggested Elephant and Castle: They are highly overpriced, and I've had some pretty bad experiences. If you want pub fare, head to the Heart and Crown or the Snug Pub on Dalhousie in the market.

Downtown is the palce to be for shopping and dining. For dining information check out http://ottawafoodies.com/tag/73 which will give you a list of reviewed restaurants in the area (the higher the number in brackets, the better reviewed it is...or rather, the more thumbs up it has).

Shopping is best in the Byward Market, on Dalhousie Street and in the Glebe, a shopping area of about five blocks from Bank Street and Fifth, to Bank Street at First--take the #1 or #7 bus to get there.

Electronic stores in Ottawa are mostly at the big box malls: There are two on Merivale Road, not easily accesible; and one at South Keys Shopping Mall (Take the 97 or the O Train to Greenboro).

Otherwise, there are several museums and galleries in the nation's capital that are also worth looking into, such as the National Gallery, the War Museum, Bytowne Museum, Parliament Buildings, and the Museum of Civilization, which houses a large exhibit on aboriginal history in Canada.
