Anyone know of any good places to go kayaking on the wisconsin river? Im looking for something that very scenic and maybe some caves on the water. Theres a bunch of us heading up there and none of us are by any means experts, so calm water would be nice too. We would be staying overnight so if you know of any good lodging on the water that would help. Thanks.

  1. Depends on where you're going; the Wisconsin River is over 400 miles long...

A popular tourist area is at Wisconsin Dells.  The river is dammed up to create Lake Wisconsin, but until a bit after Labor Day, you can expect LOTS of motor boat traffic to make things interesting.  On top of that, throw in some drunken boat drivers and you probably won't enjoy your paddle very much.

I've paddled the Wisconsin dozens of times... My preference is the lower 100 miles as it approaches the Mississippi, but each and every time, I took my camping equipment with me in my kayak, and slept on a sand bar in the middle of the river.  There are occasional shoreline campgrounds if you prefer to stay in an established site, and many of them rent boats as well.

  2. Check out Smart-Start-Kayaking.com

There is a page on paddling locations by U.S. regions,

I'm sure there's one for Wisconsin.
