Question:

Places to live in Long Island?

I'm considering a position in Manhattan for ~100K, and need some advice on where to look for a place to rent. I'm looking for no more than a 40/45 min commute on the LIRR. We'd like to find a place with off street or covered parking, and also a decent school district as my wife is a teacher. We'd also like an area where we can walk to restaurants, shopping, etc. Also, I've been to Freeport, and it seemed nice, but we'd probably prefer something a little closer to NYC. Any suggestions?

  1. Rae has some good suggestions, but Bellmore is very expensive.

1 million for a home is not unusual

  2. Great Neck, Plandome, Port Washington are all on an LIRR line that goes to Penn Station, and those are all very nice neighborhoods, and not too far from the city--  It takes an LIRR train about 30 minutes to get to Penn Station from Great Neck.

All three are reasonably close to the commercial districts along Northern Boulevard, and easy car access too to the rest of Long Island via either the Long Island Expressway or Northern State Parkway.

    Hope this helps.

  3. freeport has good areas and bad areas so be careful, in terms of a good school district, shops, restaurants id recommend rockville centre, its a really safe town with a nice little downtown and its a bit closer to the city, plus the school district is one of the top in the state, malverne is also nice, along with lynbrook and merrick.

  4. I'm definitely gonna go with the Port Washington area. I live in Glen Head & its really a lovely area. I'm less than 20 minutes from the Port Washington LIRR station & trains from there get to Penn Station in about 45 minutes. The school district is great. & there are really great restaurants in the area. & for shopping, I'm personally 13 minutes from the Americana mall in Manhasset & 19 minutes from Roosevelt Field mall. Its really a great place to live though. I'd definitely look into it. :)

  5. North Merrick is a really nice place to live. You can walk to places like school (for the kids, great school district), Subway, Dunkin Donuts, and Via Roma. The school district is great like schools like Camp Ave, Merrick Ave Middle School, and Calhoun High School. Food stores are close by and there are plenty of things to do. If you take the parkway, the Roosevelt Field Mall is about 20 minutes away and is HUGE. It's near Freeport it might be farther, but it's a great neighborhood. Merrick isn't as nice as North Merrick though because anywhere south of Sunrise Highway has a bunch of rich s****. people. Also, Bellmore is a nice town too.  My dad works in Manhattan and the commute isn't bad at all If you take the LIRR to Penn Station.

    Good Luck
