Places to meet up and talk - any suggestions ?

I'm looking for somewhere fairly quiet or discreet so we can hear each other talk, perhaps somewhere with booths - we were in a restaurant last week and could hardly hear each other speak. - any quiet country places ? Nothing too expensive. Looking at places from South London to the coast.
