Guys, off boozing in Brussels this weekend and would be hugely appreciative of any recommendations for going boozing.

If you could guide on the cost of beer/spirits too that'd be great.

Thanks

Kez

  1. you should have booked up for Gent great place and cheaper than Brussels?wonder full city is Gent and a great place the Ibis hotels great value for money clean and comfy  stick to the students areas and you will be fine if you have booked for brussels and watch out as the beer is very strong in Belgium, and I mean strong hundreds of different kinds to suit your tastes?

  2. I just spend a week in Brussels and you have to stop at the "Delirium Cafe" (check spelling). This cafe is not too far from St. Micheals Church in the heart of Brussels.  This Cafe has the Guiness Book of World Records for having the most different brands of beer to buy.  The last count was 2,004 different brands of beer for sale.  The beer list is like a mini telephone book.

I'm from Detroit, MI USA and I had a Detroit Tigers t-shirt on and I was surprised as to how many Americans were in this Bar.  Even one guy lives less the 15 miles away from me in Michigan.  Everyone was friendly and the beer was just outstanding.

If you need directions to this bar just ask about the "Pink Elephant" because that's their logo.  It was also located near the best mussles restaurants in Brussels which is their national dish.  We ate at Leono's which favored in the travel books.

  3. Downtown Brussels =

Quartiers de la Bourse, de la place de Brouckère et de Saint Géry

-near the stock-exchange building (Place de La Bourse) : night-clubs, south-American night-clubs, Le Falstaff (typical Brussels café),

-on the Boulevard Anspach : night-clubs, cafés, pubs, snack-bars

-on the Place de Brouckère : Le Métropole café, which is an institution in Brussels. (Maybe not your kind of drinking place but..worthwhile a look for its café's inside architecture)

-near & around the Place St Géry (the old covered Market) : cafés, restaurants, pubs...you name it, they have it.

    - on and around the main medieval square of Brussels (La Grand-Place) : restaurants & typical cafés.

All these places are next to each other, you can walk from one to the other.

Mid-town (if I can call it that) =

Les marolles = Rue Haute & Place du Jeu de Balle.

Also, especially on the week-ends, the neighbourhood of The

Marollen/Les Maroles is very popular for locals, expats & tourists alike:

Sundays, from early morning on - 5 h00-, there is a lot of action going on in "The Marollen" where you have a big open flea market, lots and lots of cafés -with local bands - & restaurants and shops that open on Sundays.

    Uptown Brussels =

Quartier de la Porte de Namur

Rue de la Paix & Place de la Paix . These are perpendicular to the Chaussée d'Ixelles and parallel to the Chaussée de Wavre, near the poshy Avenue de la Toison d'Or and the Boulevard de Waterloo.

Cafés/restaurants and lots of shops & galeries on the avenue/chaussées & boulevard.

For prices, somebody will have to give the info as I am not in Belgium for the moment and can't remember them. You should count at least 2 euros for a simple beer, double or more for speciality beers such as trappist or other specific Belgian beers e.g. Orval, Duvel, Kwak, etc...

    Hope this helps you already.

  4. Brussels is fun and you will surely enjoy it (i agree with the suggestions of proud Belgian above), however if you want to have more beer for your euros it's indeed better to go outside Brussels: Leuven, Gent or Antwerp.  Leuven might be quite now that students have holidays but the pub owners will welcome you with great pleasure.

In Leuven head to the "Oude Markt", in Antwerp "the Groenplaats" and in Gent to the Korenmarkt.  From there you will find your way to the best pubs

  5. Drive to Antwerp, much better than Brussels.. Good restaurants, good clubs, nice people.

Prices are just average for Belgium/Europe.

  6. We were in Brussles last year.  We loved Belgium but the cost of drinks is very high.  Most times my husband and I went out we'd have 2 drinks each and it would cost us around 20 Euros.
