Places to vacation in the U.S?

what are some good places for a family (two parents and 18 year old) to vacation that would be fun for all of them and safe enough for the teen to go of on their own?

No one should ever wander out alone. in my twenties  I traveled europe and the US alone. I planned and researched what I wanted to do and never stayed out late. Had a great time.  Met lots of nice people, but a lot of weird ones too. The US is not as safe for an 18 yr old traveler alone in an unfamiliar environment.

Try San Diego during the day  surf or wind surfing lessons, Shopping, comic con next year

I trust my teens to do the right thing  - but it's other people that worry me.

Several come to mind but I think I'd feel safe taking my 20 year old with me to the beaches of Florida Emerald Coast.
