Placido Polanco will not be the part of 2011 MLB All-Star Game – MLB News
Philadelphia Phillies’ third baseman, Placido Polanco did not make his spot in the All-Star game after being selected in the five Phillies’ players. He was named in the roster but unfortunately, only two of them will play the game.
It was the frustrating decision for Polanco that he will miss the big All-Star game, but he felt satisfied with the will of the Phillies’ managers.
The Phillies’ manager, Charlie Manuel and General Manager, Ruben Amaro Jr. both met with Polanco on Saturday night and reversed their decision although Polanco was determined to be the part of the All-Star roster. According to their assessment, Polanco will
miss the game and took some rest for the remaining half of the season.
The reason that Polanco will be out of the game is that an MRI showed a round disc in his back and he was taking an anti-inflammatory medicines which gave a negative result towards his fitness. The other two players who failed to make their spots in the
All-Star roster are Shane Victorino and Cole Hamels.
Victorino is on the disabled list since last 15 days due to sprained thumb while Hamels will be participating in the next week games and requires some rest for those competitions.
Polanco had made his value in the Phillies’ offence during the last few months due to his outstanding performances. Speaking to reporters, Polanco said,
“They decided for me. They want me to take off and rest my back. I wanted to play, but we decided it would be best for me and the team to take time off and not risk it.”
It will be the fifth straight game for Polanco that he was out of the Phillies’ team but he is still hopeful to play for the All-Star festivities in Arizona. Manuel assures the challenging performance of his team in the future and said, “This was a big series
for us to win, it is going to help our team. It probably helps us instead of hurts them. I know their team and they will come back in the second half.”
The Phillies’ assistant General Manager, Scott Proefrock said, “He hasn’t gone back-to-back yet. I’m sure there are going to be a few more outings before he’s comfortable. He still has some other things he needs to do before we would consider activating
him.”
In the MLB statistics through June 18, 2011, Placido was remarkable with his performance as he had 669 RBIs, 100 home runs and batting average of .303. Due to his impressive efforts, the Phillies were able to win five consecutive series in the first half
of the season.
