  1. Plagiarism is illegal and can get you barred from attending classes, held without a degree, and follow you around for a lifetime.....Any questions?

  2. I used to teach writing to international students at college. Other countries are less strict about plagiarism, so my students often paraphrased too closely. I think it was unintentional every time except once. I always just made the students re-write any sections that had that problem. I often made them make copies of their sources too, so I definitely caught it any time they weren't citing correctly. I did give them a talk about what can happen if they plagiarize in other classes - including that they can get a grade on their transcript saying they failed for cheating.

I do know about a student from another writing class who did get the F for the course for intentionally copying.

When it's intentional, I haven't heard many excuses. Usually they keep insisting that they didn't copy even when presented with the evidence.

  3. My sister's classmate was suspended recently for plagiarism.

A friend of mine received the verbal wrath of a co-worker.

    Both were extremely sorry.
