Plane Daddy crowned the Grand National champion
Grand National favourite Toomaline Jack failed to gain any compensation for his Derby defeat after déjà vu struck at Wimbledon last night. Jack struggled to get away from the traps, leaving Plane Daddy to claim the £7,500 prize.
The Gemma Davidson-trained Plane Daddy (8-1) stole the spotlight after producing the best break from trap three, ultimately giving him the lead over Nebuchadnezzar (9-2) who remained persistent in attempting to turn things around but missed out by one spot (0.01sec).
Trainer Gemma was almost overcome as she received the prestigious trophy. She said in the Racing Post: "Plane Daddy was so brave. I knew he'd keep finding under pressure and he did. He was brilliant."
Daddy finished the race in a cool time of 29.21sec and should really count himself fortunate that Jack wasn’t fit enough to complete the 480m distance.
Jack broke the track record last month at Wimbledon in the Derby, and has managed to adjust well with the hurdles recording the new track record in the opening round.
Any punter would have thought twice about betting against him after knowing the record he holds, but if you had done, you would probably be smiling - unlike me, who backed him with £50.
My betting slip was literally torn up and binned eight seconds into the race, as the Dolores Ruth-trained charge failed to get away and it was obvious he had gone lame.
It’s just a lesson for all gamblers out there that nothing is 100% when it comes to backing a greyhound, although I’m positive had he got out, it would have been as good as over.
Sizzlers Spirit finished in third (29.31sec), whilst SOS [Save Our Stow] leader Ricky Holloway’s Romeo In Miami clocked 29.52sec to take fourth, leaving Lenson Flash to finish fifth in a time of 29.65sec.
