Planet X-What is it?

I keep reading articles about planet x and how it is going to destroy us in 2012

i believe this is scaremongering about certain individuals and nothing will happen but can anyone explain to me what these people are saying will happen?

Two different things.  Planet X is actually facetious name given the new planet discovered beyond Pluto.  It has since been named Xena, and its moon was named after the sidekick of the TV character Xena the warrior princess.

The 2012 thing is sort of the latest UFO nut cult craze.  It's based on the prediction of the ancient Mayan calendar that "history would end" in 2012.  It's given a slight bit of credence by the fact that comet Swift-Tuttle makes a near earth approach that year (inside the orbit of the moon as I recall, but somebody check me on this), and is the subject of a really abysmal vaguely science fictiony novel out this year.

Watch the old movie called "KRULL".

2012 is just the revealing of the 'antichrist' or the 'man of lawlessness' at the middle of what Jews and Christians call the 7 year Tribulation. Many pagan cultures (Sumerians, Babylonians, Cherokee, Hopi, Chinese I-Ching {confirmed by T.McKenna}, Mayans, Egyptians, Celts, Satanists, etc...) celebrate this evil event called "the abomination that causes desolation". When will Yeshua Ha'Mashiach (Jesus) come? Only God Himself knows, but soon. If you believe or not, that is up to you. Either way it still comes.

Christians and Messianic Jews look forward to this as it means they will soon join their Messianic Saviour in the Millennial Kingdom of the next Age and their Heavenly Father later as "Children of Light". In addition to Don M's answer, the planet X called "Xena" has been officially named Eris by the IAU, but the whole 2012 thing is scaremongering and a bunch of made up stuff all thrown together and published in books, TV shows, and YouTube to make money off the gullible.  There is no rogue planet heading for us, no pole shift in the matter of 24 hours, nothing of that sort at all.  It will just be the winter/summer solstice and many people will be trying to do some last minute Christmas shopping.   You have nothing to worry about.
