Question:

Planning Application...?

Hello,

We are unsure about the conversion of a double garage (not attached to our home). We are wishing to turn it into a single room and keeping the other half as a garage - so it will change into a single garage and room.

I am unsure whether planning consent is required.

The work needed is to brick up one wall - originally a garage door - and replace with a window.

Please help, all comments are useful!

  1. You need to contact your local council and clarify the situation but I strongly suspect that you will need to submit a planning application.

  2. You will need planning permission as the conversation is a 'change of use' one.

  3. You will need building regulations.

  4. You may not need planning permission.  Normally a garage conversion into residential accommodation remaining ancillary to the main house is permitted development.  There may be planning conditions restricting you from converting though so you must contact your local planning department for advice.  (Building regs would be needed though.) info@aspireplanning.co.uk

  5. As the first answer says, ask for the Building Control Department.
