Planning a europe road trip?

I will be going on a road trip next summer and am looking for advice on places to go. I already have a basic, and rather long route that I intend to take, but was wondering if anyone had any advice on places I should see, or places I should avoid.

I am driving down to Harwich and taking the ferry to Rotterdam. Then will basically drive along a route including: Le havre, Nantes, Bordeaux, Bilbao, Santander, Seville, Tarifa (ferry to Morocco) , Almeria, Murcia, Valencia, Barcelona, Andorra, Marseilles, Milan, Zurich, Munich, Budapest, Belgrade, Sofia, Thessalonika, Varna, Odessa, Kiev, Vilnius, St. Petersburg, Helsinki (Ferry to Tallinn), Stockholm, Oslo, and Bergen.

As i will be seeing a lot of cities I was wondering if there were any small towns or villages along the way that were worth a look.

  1. To answer this question I'm just wondering how many days you have planned and what type of visa.

  2. Yes there will be small villages you pass underway that are worth visiting. In fact there are so many that it is impossible to even start listing them. From Rotterdam to the French border you will be able to spend a few weeks with only half a day in each of the villages worth visiting.

So you best just take your pick.

Get of the motorway (or do not even go on) and just visit a village that looks interesting.

For the bit from Rotterdam to France, go the western most route.

From the ferry you need to go east a bit to get round the river mouth, but head east to Hellevoetsluis, and stay on the coastal route from there.

You may want to take a look at a map, here is a link to google maps, works for me:

    http://maps.google.co.uk/maps

Just zoom and center the map till it shows the part you want to travel.

And I see that you intend to travel through Russia and Belarus, make sure you know about visa requirements, those are rather different from those in western Europe.

It looks like you have plans for a year long travel, I hope you have the time and money to make that journey.
