Question:

Planning a future in Archaeology?

I'm currently an anthropology major at Long Beach State University, and I want to eventually be an Archaeologist with a focus on ancient Mesopotamian life and religion. What schools would you recommend I go to for my graduate degree, or maybe what field schools are highly recommended for people with similar career aspirations? After I complete school, where might I go to apply for a job? Are there specific universities or museums that would be best, or would it be a better choice to work for a government organization?

  1. When looking for graduate schools, I recommend you go at the approach a different way. You should read archaeological journals, and see what professors interest you the most, and who you would most like to work with. Then, consider those universities. You have a much higher chance of being admitted to a grad program if you can talk to a professor there and get their support, or if you mention the professor in your application, and describe what kind of things you'd like to do. Otherwise, you could end up at a good school, but without a mentor, and mentoring is key!

  2. I would stay away from the government as far as archaeology goes, as one of my good friends has been an archaeologist for the BLM (Bureau of Land Management) for years now and doesnt hardly make enough money to get by. Not to mention he doesnt get to go out in the field much either. So I'd definately tell ya to aim for a museum or college to work for. Plus they're probably a bit more relaxed than the government...
