my boyfriend and I are going on trip to cancun mexico in december. is it usually cheaper to buy ticket way ahead of time, like now, or will it be cheaper to wait until the date gets closer?

It depends a little bit on the airline, where you are flying from, etc.  Sometimes prices will go down a little bit before going back up.  It depends on the timing and also how full the flights are.  Start shopping the fares to see what they are like, and see if you can get a good deal.  On occasion, airlines will have fare sales, so you can look for those.  Some of these come at the last minute though, when they're trying to fill empty airplanes, and you might not want to wait that long.  Those are better for last minute, spontaneous trips, when you don't care where you go.  Generally, you won't save all that much if you wait until it's a little closer, but it depends on the circumstances.  If the prices now seem reasonable, go ahead and buy tickets!  Good luck.

buy them as soon as you know the exact days when you want to go. prices go up as your departure date gets closer.
