I am trying to get my head around the planning does anyone have any simple instruction. I observe and write this on a a sticky pad, I then use the 0-3 cards but which bit. Plus any ideas for simple crafts again for under 3's.

  1. I love messy play. I work with 2-3's and they love it 2. We use a whole variety of things like shaving foam (sensitive sort) ice cubes, pasta (dry and cooked), jelly, Angle delight, corrnflakes, rice, hay just about anything really.

I use the sand and water tray with different washable toys. These are good activities to observe aswell. Hope this helps :)

  2. Have a look through the Birth to 3 matters curriculum and then think which area's the children you are planning for could do with improving on. Then look through the cards to see which one applies the most relevance. Ideas should either be exampled on there or will pop into your head.

Crafts: cutting, sticking, finger painting, water painting on the ground outside, chalks, pasta jewellary, playdough, printing, sponge painting, potato printing, string painting, sand painting, modelling. Just a few ideas!

  3. ok. First of all, planning for 0 to 3s must be based on the child's interests and abilities. So, first you must observe and interact with them, so that you know what they already know and can do.

Then you need to look at the part of the birth to three matters framework at the relevant stage of development/age.

Then you need to decide if they are meeting the 'targets' or 'development norms' and look at whether you are providing for their needs in all four areas.

So, for example, if you have noticed that they have a special friend, you might put a note of this in their individual record under (I haven't got the book/cards in front of me, but) I think it's a Strong Child, being special to someone.

This completed, look at the other areas of A Strong Child and see where they may need further support.

I always feel that for 0 to 3s, it's a matter of planning for the practitioner/setting rather than the child, in that it is for us to make sure that the child can meet each criteria - it's not really that the child 'should' be able to do it, if you see what I mean.

So core provision is important to ensure that babies have everything they need to become the Strong child, Skilful Communicator, Healthy Child and Competent Learner. And it's our job to ensure they have access to it and are enabled to develop appropriately.

    Do you see?

So, you just need to plan a rich environment where they can access everything they need eg. books, mark-making, messy play, role play, ICT, construction, small world, malleable, sand, water etc.

    Hope this helps! :-)

  4. A great activity for most children to participate in, and all children can benefit from is your pop bottles! Save a load of pop bottles (plastic of course), and fill them with a variety of things, I am a Nursery Manager, and we have these in all of the rooms with all age groups - they are filled with:

feathers, pasta, glitter and water, water and sequins, lentils, pom poms, water and oil (looks like lava), peas, soapy water, water with food colouring and sparkly shapes etc. The list is endless, they are cheap and very cheerful! Make sure that the lid is glued tight.

Your thorough observations should form your planning, as through your ob's you have identified what the child can do, preferences and what areas require further learning opportunities.

  5. We do the planning two ways: key person plans day to day for the child and as a group we plan end of the week for the next week.

Everyone makes notes on stickys which are put on wall-we take our childrens down and write up in the B3 books...we then decide what sort of things to have out the next session with them-any activities, books etc.

Then end of the week we look at our notes and look for any patterns in play...so if children all seem to be doing a lot of role play we extend the role play facilities, if there is a lot of enveloping we'll have wet sand and playtreasure as an activity, or cooking etc. We play what days we'll have P.E, cooking and music depending on the children we have in, when they usually decide to eat etc...that way its all planned around the childrens needs and interest. To be honest we dont look at the B3 cards very much :)

    Craft:

Shakers-two youghurt pots, lots of pasta or rice, tip it in put two pots together and cellotape or glue...to extend they can decorate pots-when dry you have a shaker!

Paint-Wall paper along the floor-clothes they can get messy-pots of paint, brushes, rollers etc and just let them free explore-doesnt matter if they crawl into it or anything!

Threading-large threading cards with those plastic 'needles'-the younger ones may not be able to do it but the 2-3's in our group love them!

Sticking-go on a nature walk and collect bits and bobs in a bag or bucket...go back to room and let them glue bits on paper to make own collage.

Crowns-large strips of card-decorate and then adult can staple/stick ends and it makes a great dressing up crown!

  6. simple crafts could be finger painting or glitter glue painting. just get somne cheap card and cheap colours/paints/glitter/glue and they will be as happy as a clown. below is a link to a craft store: hope it helps!

  7. websites such as DLTK, Under fives and first school (to list a few) are great for ideas. You may need to differentiate them to suit your child but at least you'll have a starting idea.
