Question:

Planning or "playing by ear"?

I am a college student going through what I'm guessing is a typical phase. I'm not sure if I REALLY want to go through with my major and make it my career. Sometimes I feel that I SHOULD have some sort of "life plan" and that I should know where I want to go/what I want to do...but other times I feel that I'd rather just LIVE and go "where the wind takes me"...I want to hear from people who have felt this way or have truly lived...what have YOU done...and which do you think is better?

  1. You should play by ear!!! but always have a back up plan!!!!

  2. its always good to have a plan

  3. If you go where the wind takes you.

You are taking the "path of least resistance."

Where the wind blow's lateley, the house goes with it. <}:-{(

  4. Hey there.  I remember when I was you.  My advice to you is this...just finish school and play it by ear.  If you feel that your current major is too limiting, choose one that is more of a broad scope.  I found that my major really had nothing to do with the rest of my life (so far).

Really, the key to success is finding a place that you like to work.  To get there, you need to be able to interview well and talk a good game to get your foot in the door.  You will not start off at the top of ANY company regardless of what your major says.

I never had a plan, yet here I am at age 31 running my own company with 82 employees.  The company that my wife and I own is in a field that I never even knew existed when I went to college.

I think you just need to get out there and meet as MANY people as you can.  The best advice I have ever got was this:

"Every person you meet has the potential to be in a position of power over you some time down the road.  There is never a good reason to burn a bridge"

  5. OMG i totally went through the same thing. I ended up switching majors but for a while I double majored until I was sure I wanted to switch. I ended up going to school for a fifth year but a lot of people do that nowadays. It is frustrating to not know if you're doing the right thing but the only thing you can do is try to take many different classes and check out other majors and double major if you want to or minor in something else. In the end, most people don't end up working in the field that their college major was in. I heard a statistic about this but can't remember from where. You can still do what you want. Try to get work experience and volunteer experience in different fields and it won't matter too much what your major is. A major like Business is always a good choice.

  6. Don't be afraid to study and seek out other avenues. Be SURE that you want to change majors when time comes for it. In the meantime, check out job opportunities available to other majors and decide.

Remember: A college degree, regardless of major, is generally a ticket to much better jobs with benefits and higher pay. No 4yr degree=no promising future.

  7. i had npo idea what i wanted to do and i wanted to play by ear. but in high school i randomly decided to do co-op at a elementary school. I absolutely loved it, and figured out thats what i want to do. but on the other hand be wise when taking courses because my brother just randomly picked things and ended dropping out halfway through 3 programs!!

  8. i say have a plan yet when different paths are thrown at you take them when they feel right.. good luck
