I am interested in becoming a teacher, preferably for middle school. I would love to become aTeacher of Literatures in Film, it's a class mainly focused on books that have become films and an in-depth look into films.

The only problem is I do not know how I go about making this come true. I am attending LaGuardia Community College in the Fall and will like to get some information on how to become an Literature in Film teacher.

  1. I don't know how it works over yonder, but in Oz to be a teacher you go to uni for four or five years (depending on your degree), and focus on two or three electives.  I am using acting and Literature.

The class you are describing sounds more like a unit of work that might have been completed in an English classroom, than an actual separate class.  That is in fact a topic that is required to be taught by the NSW syllabus.

Look into doing a degree in Literature with a minor in film or acting.  That should set you up.

The other thing is, teachers often end up teaching other subjects than the one they want to.  So be prepared not to teach the subject you think you want to.  The more subjects you can teach, the more employable you are!

  2. Film is an elective course, usually under the auspices of the English Department.  It's unrealistic to go into teaching with the plan to teach only one course (and an uncommon one, at that), so broaden your goal to become an English teacher.  Then you'll need to find (and get hired by) a school that offers film to its students.  And then you'll need to convince the department chair why you should teach that course instead of the other English teachers.  It will by no means the only course you will teach, however; plan on it being offered once or twice a year, with your teaching schedule filled up by other English classes.

  3. You should look at how many places offer this type of job.  I've taught for 17 years, and I've never heard of such a class, let alone a degree.  If that's the ONLY thing you could teach, you'd have a hard time finding a position.  IMO.
