It really depends on how much time you have in Cancun, there is so much to do. I would check your itinerary first, see how much time you will have and then I would purchase a excursion from the cruise line.

The reason, I recommend purchasing from the cruise line is because usually you have about 6 hours of port time and if you are delayed for any reason on the ship's excursion, the ship has to wait for you. If you go off on your own and you get delayed, you are on your own to catch up with the ship at the next port.

Greetings from Cancun!

The truth is...Cancun doesn't have a cruise ship port...the port isn't deep enough.

The closest deep water ports are in Calica, Cozumel and soon to reopen Mahawal (closed after hurricane Dean last year).

If you actually want to "see" Cancun you must take a taxi or bus which is 1-hour North.
