Planning to spend a year as a humanitarian worker, any idea where?

My friend and I would like to spend a year abroad as humanitarian workers. By December 2008, we will have graduated with a bachelor in International Studies and International Development respectively. I would very much like to work with women and children mostly. Nothing in the Middle East please. We want to work with an NGO, does anybody know about a program or a special place, we are both doing some research on the subject, it's just a question of casting a wider net.

Has anybody here been on a humanitarian mission? What was it like?

a friend of mine went to india for three months to work in an orphanage for children with special needs. i know there are many different charities which also offer programs in africa. just contact me if you want more info (i'd have to ask her for the detailed info)!
