Plant ID Needed!?

I've been trying for ages to find an id on these two plants.

Photographed in garret county, maryland.

  1. They look like they're a kind of club moss, exactly what species I couldn't tell you though.


  2. Most probably it is one of the species of Lycopodium of division Lepidophyta and family Lycopodiaceae

    The exact species of the first one is Lycopodium clavatum.

    The second one is Selaginella of family Selaginellaceae.

    It is also called "Spike Moss " Eventhough it is not a moss at all from Botanical point of view it is one of the Pteridophytes  just as Lycopodium or Club Moss is Also a Pteridophyte .

    It is a relative of Lycopodium ( a distant relative )
