Plant Repotting and/or Transplanting Plants to bigger Pots?

I have a Ficus Burgundy Robusta, a Hoya Rubra and a Pothos (Golden) Plants, that I need to repot. Just wondering if someone can give me some pointers on repotting plants. Also, how do you know when to change a plant to a bigger pot.

  1. Usually when repotting a plant, the next larger size pot is sufficient.  If the new container has drainage holes in the bottom, pea gravel or broken pottery should go in first, then a shallow layer of potting soil. If no drainage holes, use a thicker layer of gravel or pottery.

To remove plant from its old pot, grasp stem close to soil level and turn pot upside down, tapping edge of pot gently until plant slides out.  Position in new pot and fill in around sides with fresh soil, planting just as deep as in the old pot.

Water in well and keep out of sun for a few days until it gets acclimated to its new home.

Some plant species, like Jades, like to be pot bound.  Others such as spider plants need repotting more often as the root ball compacts.  Normally, if the root ball appears full and tight, you should probably bump it up to a size larger pot.

    Hope this helps.
