  1. Leylandii grow really fast but you are not allowed to grow any hedge higher than 2 metres. Sorry, but that is now the law.

  2. Hi

Plants in tubs will not grow to the height they would achieve if in the ground, so if you want privacy above fence height (say 6') then I would look to plant direct in ground.

Evergreens are obviously better as they give privacy all round.  Having said that I have just planted a birch tree to do the job as I need privacy at a great height.  Given how wet britain is I would go fro a tree in a container -but never let it dry out.  Birches are good in containers and I have seen tall eucalyptus grown successfully.  Container must be huge though to stop the wind blowing the plant over.

  3. Bamboo is quite hardy and grows well in tubs, also grows fairly fast. There are several varieties, your local Garden Centre or Nurseryman will advise you.

  4. I have a friend that planted bougelivoua for privacy and is very happy with the coverage of the fence. I don't know what type of climate is in Scottland.

  5. I would think you must have the cedar trees used for hedges...they grow as tall as 20 ft........and it doesn't take long.....you could put a lot of them in and transplant (move) every other one later..........and resell them.........all the best.
