What would happen if the apical meristem of a stem is cut off?

& How are apical meristems protected?

  1. When an apical meristem is cut off, the axillary buds in the nodes below the apical meristem are released and will start to grow.  This is a way horticulturists get plants to bush up.

    Do the experiment yourself.   Get a coleus and pinch off the apical bud.  Note how the axillary buds below start to grow.

    The apical meristem proper is enclosed within very young leaves of the bud.


  2. if apical meristem is cut plant wouldn't grow in lenght and so it would grow laterally and apical meristem of the root is protected by a root cap and the upper one i don know sorry!!!

  3. A branch would offset from underneath.

    They are protected by Auxiallary buds, well thats what i remeber.
