Plant common on beach. what is it?

Hey y'all, i live in Beaufort, South Carolina. there is a very common plant that grows in the dunes with the sea oats at Hunting Island State Park, and is also occasionally in the marshland. Can you tell me what it is?

it is a tall green plant with many stems. the leaves are positioned all the way up the stem in about 1 inch incriments. the leaves are long ovals and are waxy.

i don't think it flowers. the plant grows to be about a foot high.
