Plant name?

I have this plant at my house, but I dont know the name of it. It has a round root, about the size of a small basketball, with about 20% of the round root sticking above the dirt. It has a brown stem (or trunk) which has the diameter the same size as a large carrot. Its stem is about 2 feet high, and at the top there are many leaves growin out of the stem. The leaves are about a half inch wide and are about 2-3 feet long, and hang down the sides of the plant. The leaves are green with a sharp tip. The leaves kind of looks like Sideshow Bob's hair(from the Simpsons). What is the name of this plant?

Possibly it is an Elephant Foot palm. Look up a photo of it to see if this is what your's looks like.

I don't have an answer to your question as it is really hard without a picture, however, I was going to suggest maybe try logging onto www.davesgarden.com. You will be able to look at pictures and give details into identifying the plant. I did just the same a few days ago. I grew some seeds from a plant that I found but I sent in a picture, and it was the seeds that helped identify the plant. It turns out that I was growing a noxious weed!!
