My friend has it on his patio. If I dig it up and plant it in the garden, will it over-winter so I can put it in the container again next spring? By the way, I live in St. Louis, Missouri.

  1. It is an annual and does not over winter in cold areas.

Let it bloom, after the flower falls off, it will start producing seeds.  Let these seeds turn brown/black on the stem.  As soon as they start turning black cut them off the stem, put into an enclosed container as they will burst open and seeds will go everywhere...save for next years planting.  They do not need rich soil and are drought tolerant.

You can also grow them in pots in south facing windows.

  2. I do not believe that Ruellia is a hardy plant, and personally would not chance it outdoors..

However, I grow Ruellia to perfection in a bright windowsill, where it forms gorgeous shrubs,  and blooms intermittently throughout the year.

Take Ruellia cuttings from early to midsummer. Simply cut 3-inch stems from the tip and place in a long-necked vase or glass filled with fresh water. It will take a few weeks for the roots to form. Plant at least 5 rooted stems per pot. This practice ensures that you always have fresh plants coming should you happen to lose one of your giants, and they make terrific gifts.
