  1. Phoenix roebelenii, the pygmy date palm, appears ideal.

  2. Aspidistras are a good choice.  They're very robust and don't need much light (which is why they were popular in those gloomy Victorial rooms).  A spider plant is a very good choice near any electrical equiment and they're also quite robust..

  3. Hi, Rob,

Sansevieria has a growth which goes up rather than spreads and my daughter's boyfriend wanted something for his desk for the same reasons that concern you. I potted one up for him and he loves it. He has limited light and VERY limited space on his desk, too.

You can see a pic on this page.

There are various plants in this you can get and they grow relatively slowly. They're popular in restaurants and bars because they can withstand lower light and are very forgiving if you don't water them right away.

  4. yes lots of them. My  favorite houseplant is the ponytail palm. It is a succulent and only needs to be watered about once every two weeks. They are slow growers but can get up to 8ft as houseplants. They will grow in nearly any lighting.

Some other plants you may want to look into are:

    cast iron plant

    peace lily

    photo's

    all are great plants.
