  1. First you get the male flowers followed by the female which produce the veggie. After pollination the male flowers die and fall off

  2. Zucchini flowers only last one day. There are two kinds of flowers, ones on straight stems (male) and ones with a tiny zucchini just behind the stem (female). Only the female flowers produce zucchinis, but you need both kinds flowering at once plus bees to make zucchinis. If you don't have bees around, you will have to take some of the pollen (yellow powder) from the male flowers and put it on the pistil (it sticks up in the middle of the flower) of the female flower; sort of artificial insemination for flowers.

I remember the first time I grew zucchini. It seemed like there were days and days of male flowers before the female flowers started to appear. While you are waiting for female flowers, you can harvest the male flowers, dip them in egg and fry them. Yummy!

Once you get baby zucchinis be ready to pick them fast, within three of four days. They grow incredibly fast and if you wait too long they get tough and seedy. They are usually still good up to about three inches thick and 15" long. Much over that and they are not very good to eat.

  3. Yep - they let you  know your plant took and will grow. It's the little nub that's left after the flowers fall off that will grow into your veggie (I have some growing now too) wait about 3 days and go check those again - there will be pencil thin green growths --- keep the bunnies and deer away from them and in a few weeks you'll have nice ripe veggies
