I've planted my basil plant a couple months back and they grew fine...now the stalks are VERY thin and the leaves droop down... i haven't overwatered them i think...because they turn yellow if you do that. I don't think i'm underwatering them either, but you never know! help!

  1. Mine did the same thing in the beginning of the season.  I planted mine along side my tomatoes in large containers on my deck.  A few weeks ago I bought those Jobes fertilizer spikes for veggies and they look awesome now.  They doubled in size and no yellow leaves.

  2. They have probably come t o the end of their time. you are still suppose to cut pieces off and use them. This will encourage new growth. Try drying them out for dried herbs.

  3. You need to pinch off the tips of the stems to encourage bushier growth. Have they grown flowers on them? If so, they are probably spent- harvest the leaves for drying.

  4. sounds like you need some fertilizer along with that water.

add liquid fertilizer to your water once a week and see if that makes a difference.

as for how often to water, use the finger test.  stick your index finger into the soil around the plant down to the second joint. (for most people that's about 2 inches. if the soil you feel is dry, then the plant needs water.
