  1. 75 to 120 days depending on the variety..if you are planting one from the store..does not mean that it will be the type that you bought..this is caused from being hybreds or cross pollination..

  2. The following is the inside scoop on how to grow watermelon at a faster rate.

    1) Sun Light  is the number one factor.....80-100 days if they have direct sun for more than 6 hours a day. If they have less than 6 hours of direct sun per day it can be 100-120 days.

Other factors that affect how fast they grow are:

    2) how rich the soil is- they tend to favor a soil that is high in nitrogen (cow manure) and organic humus and also soils that have been amended with some type of phosphate fertilizer. Any type of plant that produces large volumes of fruit will favor both phosphate and rich nitrogen. It directly affects the mass and volume of produce. Everything from apple trees to tomatoes will appreciate some rock phosphate in the soil- giant watermelons are no exception.

    3) the more southern you are the better they seem to grow. Meaning they grow better in warmer climates. Melons of any type like hot weather and hot nights too. They don' t like cool nights. They will grow much better in the southern Atlantic states than they will in the mid and northern Atlantic states.

    4) They like a lot of water! No wonder why they call them watermelon because they hold in their fruit phenomenal amounts of  water! No coincidence that they grow faster when they get a frequent soaking watering.

These are the 4 main factors in determining the rate or speed in which your watermelons will be ripe. It's not unusual to hear of instances where people planted them in their garden and no fruit showed up or the fruit was not ripe by September because there was too many unfavorable conditions. Meaning the 4 factors I wrote here were not met.

  3. Your watermelons will probably take about 80 days to form fully ripe fruit. After this time period has passed, start watching the melons for signs that they are ready to be harvested.
