I'm moving away to Oregon soon, and I need to know, is it possible to get seeds from a Habanero pepper so I can plant them?

  1. Yes.  Just make sure the pepper isn't a hybrid and is ripe or the seeds won't be mature enough to germinate.  Remove and dry the seeds as one poster suggested and keep them cool and dry.

  2. yes, just cut the core out of the pepper and dry the core with the seeds attached on a paper napkin. When they are dry, rub the core and the seeds will fall off. Collect them and store them until you are ready to plant them.

Keep the seeds from your best plant each summer for the next summer. The fertility of the seeds will drop dramatically by the second summer after you collect them. By the third summer, none will germinate.

Do be aware, peppers do very well in the semi arid regions of Oregon, but the North Central area and coastal areas have a wet cool climate that isn't really conducive to good pepper growing. You may need to pick your planting spot carefully to get well drained soil and lots of sun.

  3. if the habenero is a hybrid, you wont get an exact replica.  something will be different.  why not just buy a package of seeds and you wont have anything to worry about, as long as they will grow where you are moving to.  at a cost of a buck or two, you wont be taking any chances.  one plant will get you hundreds of peppers which are very hot.  i have found that i only need 1 plant to get me more than i can stand to eat.
