  1. I would mow all weeds and dead grass very close to the ground.  Spread your seed out and cover with wheat straw.  The straw is very important for maintaining moisture, water each day for until grass begins to germinate than cut back to about 3 times a week for a couple of weeks and than go to 5 day schedule.

  2. Cultivate the area, add grass seed, water and forget it. All the home improvement stores carry seed that'll grow just about anywhere. If it's area that see's frequent pet urine, check out places online that specialize in dogs or cats. They now make a product that will lesson the acidity of your pets urine. Hey, good luck to ya!

  3. Use a broad leaf weedkiller first. Rake up as much of the dead grass as you can, then plant seed.  Be prepared for weeds.  After you mow 2-3 times, spray with the weed killer again.
