Question:

Planting new lawn?

We've just reseeded and 'mulched' (with grass mulch pellets that retain water, fertilize and help keep away birds). I am wondering what the rules are for watering (daily? Keep moist? every other day?) and what are the mowing rules? No mowing until a certain height? Mow a lot to encourage growth? We've only seeded a small area to see 'how it goes' and assuming we can get it right we'll be doing more! Any info is greatly appreciated!

thanks

  1. All good advice (above) Here's one more thing:

Don't water the grass a day or even two before you cut it for the first couple of times.  This will keep the soft surface a little drier and therefore alleviate the much-dreaded "wheel rut" from the heavy lawn mower.

  2. The grass mulch pellets are a great idea. =) Meanwhile, keep the seeds moist, even if it means watering every day or more than once a day... but don't over do it and wash them away.

The seeds should germinate and sprout pretty quickly. Once having done so, keep the grass watered (just as you would need to keep any lawn watered). And as for mowing.. don't rush it. Let the grass develop strong roots so that a shearing won't put too much stress or shock on it. And then when you do start to mow, don't scalp it! Most grasses hate that.

You may likely wind up with some bare or less plush areas, so you may need to over-seed. Oh, and another tip about keeping a healthy lawn: many people are fanatics about having their lawn clippings removed. Fact is, lawn clippings (just like your mulch pellets) are about the best fertilizer your lawn can have. Provided the grass isn't allowed to get too tall (to avoid thatch), let the cuttings lie every other cutting or so. In the long run you'll spend a lot less on lawn fertilizers.

  3. water daily. if you miss a day here and there, it's no big deal. water early evening when the sun is begining to set. otherwise it will dry up the water and fry the lawn....

but you only to need to water fresh grass daily, once it's in and full, you won't need to water as often. you can if you want, but it's not necessary. Once it's in and full, you can water it as little as once a week if you want.

no mowing rules really, just when you see fit, whatever length you prefer your lawn to be. But mow at least once a week.

  4. You water as often as needed to keep the seeds moist. Once they sprout you wait until they reach at least 3 inches and then cut only 1/2 inch and keep mowing at regular intervals from that point on. If you set the deck height to 3 inches after the first mow, you will maintain a healthy lawn.

  5. Hi you should water it every day to keep moist until it starts to take a hold. Then you dont cut it until it is about 4-6 inches tall and use a sharp blade on the mower to cut it.

  6. All I can say is don't cut too low on 1st cut. Did that and killed the lawn. SIGH!!
